Episode 08 "They Keep Killing Suzie!"
I am not posting an audio review of this weeks Torchwood episode. Why? Because I pretty much hated it and have little that is positive to say about it! I found the characterization frustrating, the storyline grim and cruel and the morality questionable. For the first time in the series I could find nothing to really enthuse about. All in all, I was terribly disappointed.
Sure the story was clever, the interplay intense and the idea of bringing back the character of Suzie via 'the resurrection glove' was interesting. However, I found the whole empty universe, this is all there is explanation depressing. The episode was disturbing and cruel, but yet offered little in the way of hope to the viewer in compensation.
The original vision as espoused by the creators, was that Torchwood would offer an optimistic vision of humanity and its future. This weeks episode appeared to me to be an abject failure on both scores and instead presented a bleak morally empty universe, peopled by human-beings with few redeeming qualities. I confess it left me feeling slightly cheated and hoping that the series pulls back some of its early wit and polish.
The character of Gwen remains its most sensitive and approachable personality. On this weeks evidence she appears to be carrying that burden alone.
